Come Home and Download

Big news in the DRM (Digital Rights Management) wars: the uber-popular group, Radiohead, is, with its new release (In Rainbows), experimenting with what may be the way of the future in music consumption.

The group is offering, for unrestricted download, its new album - for whatever the user feels comfortable paying, including nothing.

And the compilation is onlyavailable via the Radiohead website (http://www.inrainbows.com/Store/Quickindex2.html).

In other words, they've done what this observer has long felt should be done: cut out the no-longer-necessary middleman.

Granted, music companies may perform some useful service in promoting new talent - though even in this category, the Internet is rapidly usurping the over-priced services with sites like GarageBand, where newcomers can offer music to fans - and fans can rate it, and create virtual-radio-station playlists for others to enjoy - directly, bypassing the frequently-faulty gatekeepers who used to evaluate your talent, and either usher you in, or shut you out, of the performance world.

Viva democracy.

On another front, the MDA and Citizens Bank have joined forced to create a web page whose sole purpose is to bring wandering Syracusans home: www.comehometosyracuse.com.

As they explain it, "Come Home to Syracuse is a volunteer-driven organization that can help you create the professional network that could land you a job in Central New York. By providing us with some basic information and a resume, we will locate a volunteer in your career field that can offer some valuable advice. Already here in CNY? Volunteer to help others come home."

Divided into Live, Work and Play sections, the site offers in-depth information about each, but most importantly, the site offers fence-sitters a chance to sign up for assistance in making the move.

According to the website: "Your info (on the form you fill out online) will arrive in the Come Home to Syracuse office and, based on your interests and the type of job you seek, you will be assigned to a volunteer. The volunteer with contact you to provide you with resources for your job search, and to try to answer other questions you may have."

Viva Syracuse!
