Steps for troubleshooting a dialup network connection:
1. Connect a phone to the specific line and make sure it's working properly (you get a dial tone, can make a call). If no, call the phone company.
2. If the line is working, try other dial up numbers (other than the one you usually use)
3. Check the connections: between phone jack and computer; between modem and computer (if you have an external modem)
4. Turn off call waiting (type *70 atht e beginning of the number your computer dials out)
5. Try selectively disconnecting any other devices on the phone line (answering machines, routers, other phones, etc.)
6. Try reseating internal modem
7. Get to another computer and download the latest and greatest drivers and firmware (onboad software for your modem)
Steps for troubleshooting a high-speed modem connection:
1. if you use DSL or ISDN (*you will hear hisses and clicks, not a dial tone; if you hear nothing, line is dead)
2. check all connections
3. For DSL, Cable, and satellite connections: restart modem; turn off computer, disconnect modem (unplug), wait about 2 minutes, reconnect modem to power source, turn on computer. Release and renew IP address. Windows 95/987/ME: Start/Run/winipcfg and ENTER. Select your Ethernet card from list, click release, and renew. Click ok. Windows 200/XP: Start/All Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt. c:\ and ENTER. type ipconfig/release (ENTER) then ipconfig/renew (ENTER). Close window.
4. Call ISP.
For home networking issues:
1. Make sure all cables are connected properly
2. check to see that you have a network connection
3. Win 95/98/ME: Network Neighborhood or Network places. Under The Following Network Components Are Installed, look for TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) NetBeui (NetBIOS Extended User Interface) and File and printer sharing for Microsoft Netowrks. If all listed, click OK. if one is missing, you will need to install it.
To install TCP/IP: click Add. In the list the appears, double-click Protocol/Select internet protocol box under Manufacturers select Microsfot. Under Network protocols select TCP/IP. Click OK.
To Add NetBEUI, click Add and install NetBEUI the same way.
To install File and printer sharing: click File and Printer Sharing button. In dialog box, check next to "I want to be able tyo give others acces to my files" and click Ok.
When done, click OK. Restart computer if prompted.
4. Win2000/XP:
Right click My Network Places/Properties. In window, right-click Local Area Connection and choose Properties. If F&P sharing for Microsoft Networks and TCP/IP are visible and have checkmarks, click ok. If not, install.
TCP/IP: Click Install, select Protocol, click Add. Select Internet TCP/IP from list, click ok.
File and Printer sharing: Click Install. In dialog box, select Service and Add. From list choose File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Netwoks and click Ok.
Click Ok, and restart computer if prompted.
