Text Message via FireFox

While I'll never be the text-messaging afficiando that many kids are - I can't believe how easily they can type on their cell phone keypads - I do recognize the benefits of texting. You don't really need to call the person, and you don't really need an immediate response. You just want to let them know something like "I'll be there in half an hour," or "Pick up some milk on your way home."

One easy way to get the benefit of a full-sized keypad and a text message to cell phone is using Google free Send to Phone. It's a free download for the FireFox browser.

Available from Google Labs, you install the applet on your FireFox browser. Once installed, a small cellphone icon will appear in the upper right toobar. Click on it, and an interface will open. Now, all you have to do is type in the phone number you wish to reach, as well as the carrier for that number (that's the one catch - you have to know your recipients carrier), type your message, and send. It's just that easy.

The applet also comes in handy for sending information to your own cell phone that you want to have with you when you're on the road. For example, let's say you're traveling and you want some directions. Call a friend, and have him text you the directions. No need to pull over and write them down, they'll appear on your cell phone in text format to be referenced as often as you need.
