Notes for August, 2007

July 11, 2007
I recently got the elcheapo TV version of DDR (Dance Dance Revolution), an arcade game that requires you to tap the appropriate box on a floor pad to keep time with musical selections. On the screen, you see arrows indicating which pad to tap, and as they pass the "now" marker, you have to tap the right pad with your foot/feet on the musical beat. It's actually a really good workout, but to get the "good" home model, you have to invest in a Playstation or Xbox - or (gulp) free-standing model for a cool $1300. I thought I'd find out how much I liked it before considering one of those options. For now, the TV version suits me just fine - and it was only $8!

Now there is the Wii Fit, a step-pad type peripheral to the Nintendo Wii - the game box that lets you use your full hands/arms to direct the action of the games, ideally getting you up off your seat and moving around a bit while you play. Wii Fit "is a step-pad type device which allows you to stand, sit, do push-ups, and other aerobic exercises such as jump-roping alongside a new title, Wii Fit. The game will monitor your health rating, and provide many mini games to get your fat butt in shape."
Wii consoles run about $399-450 to start. I don't have a price on the Wii Fit yet, but here are some great screen shots and demo pix.
