Books, Books, Books

You've probably heard of Project Guttenberg:
"Project Gutenberg is the first and largest single collection of free electronic books, or eBooks. Michael Hart, founder of Project Gutenberg, invented eBooks in 1971 and continues to inspire the creation of eBooks and related technologies today."

Well, Librivox is similar, but offers books-on-tape, rather than e-books. Readers are strictly volunteer, and downloads are free.

I recently signed up to participate in a Librivox project. Readers can donate as much as as little time as they wish. The far more demanding job is that of project coordinators, who have to procure readers for each chapter of a chosen book, get "listeners" who will check the work for errors and omissions, and then package the whole thing up for "publication."

Books, plays, poems and other readings are gathered from public domain, so don't expect to find recent best sellers on this publication list! What you will find is: Shakespeare, Louisa May Alcott, Aesop's Fables, The Bible, Jane Austin, Jack London, Emily Post, Robert Service... well, it's an impressive list. As you might expect, reader quality varies, but you have to admit the price is right!

And for those of us who just know you're being watched: check out Big Bother is Watching You. See, you knew it!
