Google Templates

Here is yet another reason to try Google Documents: templates!

Templates, of course, are documents that have pre-defined and styled elements, such as headers, footers, and graphic elements. You plug your specific value into a header, but the template styles it for you, making it look professional.

"More than 300 (templates) are found at www.Google.com in the Google Docs Template Gallery, launched in late July and covering everything from project management schedules and travel expense reports to gas mileage calculators. The templates are accessible from any computer and require no fee or special software, just a Google password," says The Buffalo News.

To use the templates, simply launch Google Documents, expand the "New" dropdown menu, and select "From template." This will launch the templates menu, where you can find categorized templates, and samples of how each template looks. Select the one you want, and get to work. Templates are the work of contributors, and the age and interests of these folks is obvious: Google spreadsheet templates are available for divying room-mate expenses, planning weddings, and splitting expenses among a group. One of the most popular templates is a resume (there are several).

Google Documents is a good example of "Software as a Service," or SaaS. Google Documents are free, but it was speculated quite a while ago that the day would come when nobody would have software resident on our computers. Instead, we would log on to an online location (like Google), and "rent" software for as long as we needed. The bill would become like any other utility bill. The downside would of course be the fee - but the upside would include always having the latest and greatest, always having a good working installation, and having access to any and all software no matter where you happen to be working (and on what computer).
