Some Fun

I've often posted some of the fun sites I visit regularly, but I would be remiss if I didn't steer you toward Wimp.com.

This site is just plain fun - nothing more than that - but at the same time, can be at once funny and profound. I have spent many a happy minute, well, ok, hour watching Wimp videos, going from something touching, to something ethereal, to something laugh-out-loud funny, to something informative, and all the way around to something deeply moving, all within the space of half an hour.

It's a plain-vanilla-enveleop, nothing fancy or overbuilt here. It's simply a grey background, black text platform for a video player. Videos are served up at random - there aren't categories or searches or any other tricks, gimmicks, or tools. Users are free to upload videos (or, download them as the case may be, if you find that someone has uploaded a video you own and didn't intend to share, for example), in the following file formats: AVI, FLV, M4V, MOV, MP4, MPEG, RMVB, WMV.

Wimp is adamant that it's a "family friendly" website, so users can be confident that kids of all ages will find the content interesting and appropriate (and thus far, I have to agree with them). One of the most frequent reasons for a video not being uploaded is that it is considered inappropriate for all audiences, and/or sensationalistic.

The idea behind Wimp is to simply share good, creative short videos. Today, for example, I watched a very cute video of a cat giving a dog a massage, followed by a visually spectacular time-lapse "day on earth" video, followed by a wonderfully creative video of snowboarders at night with LED ski-suits, and finishing up with a totally silly video of an older gent lifting a refrigerator by himself and loading it - gate up - into the back of a pickup. How do you describe a site that offers so much unadorned fun?

Check it out at wimp.com.
