http://whatis.techtarget.com
A website for the geek-at-heart. Terminology, quizes, general topics on computing, internet, programming, etc.

www.alternet.org
I had hopes for this site: supposedly, a "truth in reporting" website, it's actually just a VERY left-leaning site. Still, makes for interesting reading. I'm still trying to find the site that simply reports facts and lets us all make up our own minds. On the other hand, some of the writing is very good, and there is a wide sampling of writers featured here.

www.myway.com
The tag line: No banners. No popups. No kidding.
A barebones kind of portal (powered by Google, it's sort of a mix of Google and Yahoo). You can configure it to suit you. It has sponsors, but these are clearly identified so you don't mix them up with real search results.
You get a report on how long a page took to retrieve and load. And you can get a 6MB email account free (or you can forward other accounts to MyWay).

www.on-this-day.com
This is a fun site: for a variety of topics, you can find out what happened On This Day. For example, I found out that "on this day" in 1979, the last episode of All in the Family aired. It's an intensely ugly and amateurish looking site. Still, you do find yourself choosing from the calendar to find out about your birthday (who knew that Mr. T and I share a birthday?), your kids' birthdays, today, tomorrow...

www.refdesk.com
A funded-by-donations site, "Since 1995, free and family friendly. Refdesk indexes and reviews quality, credible, and current information-based sites and assists readers in navigating these sites." You can search a number of sites from this one location. Don't like the results you got on Yahoo? Try Google. Top news stories are front and center. Check out the atomic clock.
