Mobi
Have you encountered a URL in the form name.mobi? If you haven't yet, you will soon. .mobi (or, DotMobi)is a top-level domain approved by ICANN and managed by the mTLD global registry dedicated to delivering the Internet to mobile devices via the Mobile Web.
Open for registration in September, 2006, .mobi very quickly racked up headlines with outrageously priced domains, such as Flower.mobi for $200,000, and Fun.mobi for $100,000.
Mobi, obviously short for "mobile," has been active not only in promoting website development for mobile devices, but also, according to Wikipedia, "engaged with the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) to help formulate the MWI Best Practices for mobile content. The practices outlined a number of ways to achieve good user experiences on mobile Web-enabled devices, and recognized several methods of implementing these practices."
The whole idea of a .mobi site is optimization - providing the content in a way that fits on a relatively tiny screen, without compromising (too much), its efficacy.
Want to see how a website would look? Go to http://pc.mtld.mobi/ (the PC version of the site) to get an idea of what your web browsing experience would be on a mobile phone - if you haven't adopted this technology already. Check out the dotMobi mobile emulator.
At this same site, you can register your .mobi domain, and get developer's information and stylesheets for porting your website over to .mobi.
