Not So Little LuLu

Admit it - you've always thought you could write a book.

Now's your chance to prove it.

Over at Lulu.com, writers, photographers, film-makers, artists, and auteurs of all kinds are finally getting a chance to by-pass the gatekeepers of the publishing/distribution/gallery worlds and go right to the public with their creative works.

Here's how Lulu explains it:
"Lulu gives you the power to publish and sell books, e-books, calendars, and more.

1. Lulu is FREE, FAST and EASY
No set-up fees. No minimum order. No delay. No catch. Lulu prints and ships each book as it's bought. The buyer pays the cost — not you. Lulu only makes money if you do.

2. You're in control
You retain all rights to your work. You decide on design and layout. You set the price and creator revenue. Lulu's not the publisher — you are.

3. Sell to the world
Lulu lets you sell your work through Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble — and on Lulu itself. Lulu handles all transactions, order tracking and shipping.

Lulu wants you to understand that it is not a vanity press. Vanity presses are companies that, for a fee, will run a limited printing of your book. Instead, Lulu offers something called "print on demand."

Print on demand is the child of modern printing technology which can cost-effectively print, collate, bind, and deliver only what you need. As there are no press setups, there is no minimum run required to make the process financial sensible. You can print one copy, or a thousand. It all depends on how many you need.

Let's say you want to print a family history for the 127 people in your family. You write the book, select the binding style, supply the cover art and copy in digital format, and you can publish the book under your own name for the cost of that printing. (There is no requirement that you buy your book, as it will only be published when and if a copy is actually purchased!)

If, however, you want to publish your murder mystery and offer it via Amazon, Barnes&Noble or other retail sites, you can take advantage of Lulu's publishing arm - and they'll help you market your book to the buying public, printing and delivering books as the orders come rolling in. In that case, Lulu will take a commission on the sale of the book.

And copies of your book are so inexpensive, it might just become a vanity item to have at least one book you've written on your coffee table: a hard cover with dust jacket is $15.00 for the binding, and $.02/page.

So what are you waiting for? You know you've got the next Great American Novel in you...
